in the 40s and it's not growing to take much to get us into the low to mid-50s this afternoon with mostly sunny skies. it will be breezy. while it's cool for february, it's a lot better than being in the 20s and 30s which is something we could see this time of year and likely will see that colder air in some form, not 20s but some 30s over the weekend. clouds to the south across southern virginia and pennsylvania. a few of them drifting into northern maryland but for the most part we have clear skies and windy conditions coming down a little bit but still gusting over 30 in petersburg and martinsburg. we're gusting 28 right now. we had gusts a few hours ago over 40 out in the mountains. temps, look at that, in the 40s but now with the lighter winds, manassas and culpeper down to 39. still 47 in annapolis and frederick at 43. looking at high temperatures this afternoon, we'll be in the low to mid-50s out there. so very, very comfortable for this time of year. storm system tomorrow could bring us a few problems. more on that coming up. right now here's monika with timesaver traffic. >>> the

.m. on the east coast, 11:00 a.m. out west. thanks for joining us. i'm miguel marquez in for fredricka whitfield. new information about a horrifying hostage situation in al bam pla now in its fifth day. police are in constant communication with a man holding a 5-year-old in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama. george howell is there. police came out with new details what items the suspect jimmy lee dikes is giving the child. what are they? >> we just heard from the sheriff here, wally olson. he said a few interesting things. we learned that mr. dykes has electric heater and blankets. certainly it's cold in the bunker, about a constant 50 degrees in that bunker underground. they're still able to get the young boy medications he needs. he suffers from asperger's syndrome and dhd. also able to get him the crayons and coloring book. also toys. and there was another interesting thing that i noticed in this particular press conference. when the sheriff said that he wanted to thank mr. dykes, listen to this. >> he's told us that he has a lk heater and blankets inside that he's taking care of

will use super bowl sunday to talk about government regulations when it comes to the issue of steroids or head injuries. the phone lines are open. let's begin with a look at some of the headlines courtesy of the museum. from "the san francisco chronicle" -- from "the baltimore sun" -- let's turn to the politics and policy behind the nfl. this is a story a few days ago from "the washington post." outlining a plan and a letter to the executive director of the players union. they agreed as part of a 2011 collective bargaining agreement that the players should be tested for hgh, but the two sides of that agreed. two seasons have been played without it. last weekend in new orleans, roger goodell was asked a number of questions including one on the issue of head injuries. here is more from last week.
